Nutella is probably one of humanity’s greatest food inventions, but it may be destroying the planet.
According to French environment minister Ségolène Royal, people need to stop eating the hazelnut spread unless it drastically changes its recipe.
In a interview for TV channel Canal + last night, she said:
‘We have to replant a lot of trees because there is a massive deforestation problem, which also leads to global warming. We should stop eating Nutella, for example, because it’s made with palm oil.’
Palm oil has become a controversial ingredient over the past few years, as it was revealed that its plantations are often taking the place of rainforests worldwide.

‘Oil palms have replaced trees, and therefore caused considerable damage to the environment’, Royal added.
